5 out of 5 stars great knife   March 14, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

This is a great knife. Make sure you buy a new one and not a used one. once i did that buying another product on here and it did not come with everything that it said it would. But dont take my word for it. A lot better than i expected. I bet it is almost as good as a $60 knife. only you get this one for $22.
The handle is great i expected it to be really loose and that it would fall apart. but it didn't. it is a solid metal handle that im pretty sure is smelted into the end of the knife. I kind of with it had a little rubber for grip but it is all metal. but i dont think it will change the use of the knife. it might give you a blister or two. Although the handle is hollow it is strong. When you unscrew the bottom cap it reveals a compas on the other side of it. In the hollow handle is a plastic waterproof container that consists of fishing line, hooks, matches, a striking strip for the matches, neetle and thread.
The blade is pretty long. it is black It has a hole pretty close to the tip that im guessing you are supposed to attache the fishing line to to go fishing. on the backside of the knife are teeth for sawing. they are really sharp. the main part of the knife is really sharp too.
The sheath is as long as the knife. when you put the knife in it there is a durable plastic sheath. and i guess it is like sewn into it or something cause i dont think it will come out. When you put the knife in it up by the loop that you put on your belt is a strap that attaches around the handle so that id does not fall out. on the outside of the sheath there is a small pouch with a sharpening stone in it. it buttons up so that it does not fall out too.
When i first saw this knife on here the only dimensions it said was the length of the whole knife. the length of the knife is actually almost excactaly 14 and one half inches. The actual blade is almost exactly 9 inches. there is a little part of the knife in between of the blade and the handle. where it starts to form the blade. that part is a little more than a half inch. the width of the widest part of the knife is almost one and three forths inches. the teeth of the back of the blade start about a half inch from the part forming the knife and ends four and one half inches farther up on the blade. the handle is about four and one half inches too. you can put something 1 in. in width in the handle. the compass works best when you lay it on the ground. great knife!!!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome knife   January 4, 2008

This knife was not bought seriously. My roommate and I saw it and decided that it would probably provide more than 20 dollars of entertainment. (previously we had gotten a cheap katana and had loads of fun). So, a 15 inch black survival knife? Sounds awesome.

Then, we went camping with it. The stove we rented did not fit the fuel canister we had, but luckily the fire ban had been lifted. The knife soon became used to collect firewood, allowing us to chop branches off of fallen trees. For thicker branches, the sawback worked (although not that well- most branches were best cut by hacking)

The knife was very useful for various tasks around camp, and soon we located it in a central location so that everyone could get it when they needed it (which was pretty often).

All in all- it's actually a pretty good knife. The stuff in the handle is pretty useless, and the knife is pretty big, making it unwieldy for delicate tasks. However, if you know what you're getting (it's a 15 inch knife!), then it's a pretty good purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Great Knife for a Great Price   August 26, 2007

This is a very good knife. Its very large, but compared to other knives of the size, its actually fairly light weight. The knife is very, very balanced when the compass part is screwed in. It weighs about a pound and a quarter, and will not weigh you down while backpacking.

The survival gear in the handle is fairly useful. Mine didn't include any sinkers, like the picture shows, and I replaced the matches it came with with waterproof matches, added a needle, and three or so sinkers. There is a small amount of room behind the pocket in the sheath for the sharpening stone, and I put a flint and little metal piece (so as not to ruin the knife's finish) in behind it. I also managed to fit 20 or so iodine pills in a separate bag in the handle.

The knife comes sharp, but not razor sharp, and i spent a fair amount of time sharpening it before taking it anywhere. The sheath is nice, with a plastic lining to keep the knife from cutting through the fabric. The sharpening stone is very small and pretty low quality, and is hard to sharpen the knife with, but in a survival situation its far better than nothing. If you can find one the right size, I'd suggest replacing it with something higher quality. Although you cant really tell from the picture, the knife has a rather large serrated edge, which works like its supposed to. Compared to a similar knife, the master jack assault knife (also available on amazon), this knife feels much sturdier, it doesn't shake like a part is coming loose when you use it. It weighs far less than the jack knife, and the compass actually works. All in all, a great, reliable knife for very little. Just be aware that you're buying a gigantic knife (measure out fifteen inches before ordering)

Just got the knife and really like it. And if you dont like the stuff it comes with in the handle, you can replace it with your own.

This knife is incredible. Granted, it's better to replace the fishing line and hook with higher grade material, but other than that the knife was perfect. Just remember that the sharpening stone isn't for sharpening the whole blade from its manufacturer's dull, but for touch-ups after the blade has been sharpened.
